Creality's Ender 3 Max is a basic blast from the past. Here are our first impressions.

The main show of the Creality Ender 3 Max is its hefty slab of a build plate, here in Creality’s impressive-sounding carborundum glass. In normal speak, it’s a 300 x 300 mm flat sheet of glass, with a surface texture that grips the print when hot, and releases it when cold.

Standing tall above this print area is a Z-axis of 340 mm, 60 mm less than on the Creality CR-10, the printer the Ender 3 Max is closest.

The print head itself has a curious design, with the push-fit coupling for the Bowden tube recessed below the top of the print head housing. If this remains as is on the finalized Ender 3 Max, users might have a tedious time removing the print head housing before accessing the push-fit for the Bowden tube. Maintenance and blockage-clearing action will be a pain in the posterior.

Creality's Ender 3 Max

Creality indicated to us that the Ender 3 Max will ship with a “silent” mainboard. We assumed that the printer would ship with some flavor of TMC stepper motor drivers for quiet operation. This doesn’t seem to be the case, though, with this preview printer whirring and whining away just as the Ender 3 did back in 2018. Cracking the printer open, we find Creality’s new 4.2.2 32-bit board, rocking non-replaceable A4988 stepper motor drivers

Small change aside, we do quite like the Creality Ender 3 Max. It’s shaping up to be a decent simple big-volume printer, though there’s plenty of room for improvement both on Creality’s part pre-launch and for the user customizing their machine
